Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening & Facemask

I’ve seen this trending now on many social media sites and well I’ve been super curious so I figured why not test it out! Here’s a little info on activated charcoal first, I didn’t know it had so many health benefits. It helps with alleviating bloating and gas, when you orally take it ( it comes in pill form). They use it to treat alcohol poisoning, it will also help with hang overs! In many cases it is used for overdoses and food poisoning ( emergency toxin removal). It can be used for mold and digestive cleanses. When used in your body it will improve function in your kidneys and reduces high cholesterol. When used on teeth it can help prevent cavities and heals tooth decay. Many people also use it for facial masks to help treat acne.

It can be used in various ways such as teeth whitening, facial masks, bath bombs, shampoo, body scrubs, poultices, makeup ( eyeliner and mascara), and salves. I used it for teeth whitening and for a facial mask.

Here is my experience using activated charcoal, I will be brutally honest. I bought mine from a health food store for about $12, it came in a pill form so you will have to empty the capsules to use the powder inside (picture below of product used).  It is a lot messier then you think it will be, you will need a lot of soap! I sacrificed a face cloth and a tooth brush for this. You should not wear anything white and try not to get it in your hair. It will cling to everything and it is pretty hard to wash off. I don’t think I will be doing face masks with it anymore due to the messiness, I had to scrub my sink afterwards and the dish I used.

For the face mask I suggest using 3 capsules of activated charcoal and 1 tsp coconut oil. Mix it together in a bowl and carefully apply to your face. I cannot stress enough that white clothes should not be worn when using this. Make sure your hair is tied back and away from your face, it is hard to get out. Leave it on for about 10-15 mins and wash off. I used soap and a washcloth. I ended up throwing out the washcloth so use something you won’t care if you toss it later. It should look something like this when your done!

For the teeth whitening I used 3 capsules and 1 tsp coconut oil. Give it a good stir and apply to a tooth brush. brush your teeth like you always do and leave it on for 5 minutes. It has no flavor whatsoever, it does feel gritty between your teeth. Here is a before picture (unbrushed teeth) and what it looks like when you apply it.

After Applying

After the 5 minutes have gone up, rinse your mouth out with water until most of the charcoal is gone. Then brush your teeth with toothpaste ( I brushed twice), it should all come off. It made my teeth a bit whiter and made them feel super clean. I would definitely do this again and recommend it to others. Here are the After pictures.
